I loved you, Dad, even though you were an awful parent to me -- your first of 5 children. I was not the masculine "chip off the old block" that you wanted so badly in a firstborn son. But I forgive you because you learned, you learned to be gentle and loving with your later children. I know that, near the end, you felt guilty about your youthful, cruel behavior aimed at me. During the past decade you made attempts to heal the past. I am grateful for this. You were a powerful man, a stoic military man, a heroic fire fighter, an electrical contractor and mining engineer in a foreign country. These are ultra-masculine pursuits that your son regards with great awe and reverence. I miss your big, calloused hands, your brawn, your clever ways, your laughter. You took guff from no one, ever. In spite of earlier mixed emotions, I'm discovering that a deep sorrow is building-up in me now. I miss you very badly.
